Liposuction
How does liposuction work?
Excess fatty deposits in the chin and neck may give the appearance of being
overweight. This unwanted fat can be gently removed by vacuum suction through
very small incisions placed in hidden locations. This procedure is most
successful in individuals that have good skin tone to the neck, allowing the skin
to pull up nicely after fat removal. The most remarkable aspect of this procedure
is the amount of improvement that sometimes can be achieved with such limited
incisions.
Liposuction of the chin and neck region works in two ways: (i) volume reduction
and (ii) tissue tightening. Using a very small tube inserted under the skin, suction
is used to gently remove the excess fatty tissues of the neck. After the fat has
been removed, a few days of compression (pressure) dressing allows the skin to
'shrink' and redrape to the new contour of the neck. The healing process that
occurs under the skin following neck liposuction assists in tightening of the skin
and underlying tissues.
The ideal candidate for neck liposuction is someone who has excess fat in the
neck or chin but has relatively good skin tone. With good skin tone, when the fat
is removed, there is a better likelihood that the skin will contract and redrape to
the new contour of the neck.

With advancing age, when there is significant skin laxity, the skin and muscle of
the neck may not re-drape as tightly following liposuction alone. In these
instances a tightening procedure, such as a face and neck lift, may be required to
give the optimal result.

As a general rule, before the age of 45, there is good enough skin tone that
liposuction alone gives a good contour to the neck. From 45-50, if there is only a
minimal amount of fat, a good result can still be achieved with neck liposuction
alone. But, if there is quite a lot of neck fat, a simultaneous neck lift is often
required to obtain the best possible outcome. After the age of 50, generally
liposuction alone will not be enough to achieve the best neck contour and some
form of neck lift is advised.
The ideal technique for chin and neck liposuction is microcannular tumescent
liposuction. This involves use of a very small diameter liposuction device
(cannula) that measures less than 1/10 of an inch in diameter. Because of the
small cannula size there are a number of advantages that include:
- Very small incisions
- Less bleeding and bruising
- Less pain
- More even contour
- More precision in removing small collections
- Quicker recovery
What procedures may be combined with neck liposuction?
A number of facial plastic surgery procedures may be combined with neck
liposuction to address other areas of concern. Neck liposuction is often
combined with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) or brow lifting to improve droopy
eyes or baggy eyelids, with chin augmentation and/or rhinoplasty to improve an
undesirable profile, with laser resurfacing to improve wrinkles and sun-damaged
skin, or with facelift, neck lift and featherlift procedures to improve sagging of the
face. The fat removed during neck liposuction may also be re-injected into the
lips or nasolabial creases.
